Mike Komisarek
Mike Komisarek, born on January 19, 1982 in West Islip, New York, is a professional ice hockey player hailing from Long Island. He currently plays as a defenseman for the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League.
He began playing competitively on Long Island, NY, but soon he outgrew the competition around him. He then played for the New England Jr Coyotes of the EJHL. He was then picked up by USA Hockey's National Team Development Program. From there he was awarded a full athletic scholarship to the University of Michigan where he played along side fellow Long Islander, Eric Nystrom, who was drafted by the Calgary Flames.
After two impressive seasons at the University of Michigan (CCHA), he was selected in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft (1st Round, 7th Overall) by the Montreal Canadiens. He is a defenseman and is known for his strength and physical play. He is listed at 6'4" and 240lbs. Komisarek played his first NHL game in the 2002-2003 season with the Montreal Canadiens.
Mike Komisarek has made a career out of being a rough, mean, hard-hitting stay-at-home defenseman. As such, he seldom contributes offensivly. In fact, it took him over 123 games to score his first NHL goal, vs the Washington Capitals on March 20, 2006, where he was named the first star of the game. Nontheless, his willingness to stand up for his teammates and his hard-hitting style have made him a fan favourite in the Bell Center. Plays most nights with star defenseman Andrei Markov, with whom he forms a successful pairing. As he matures more as a well-rounded player, his offensive game should pick itself up, but, for the time being, he will be known as a solid, stay-at-home defenseman.
